The Child Witness Service provides court preparation, which includes education, stress reduction, empowerment and support and consultation regarding the child's practical, emotional and developmental needs.
The service familiarises the child with the layout of the courtroom, court procedures, the roles of the various court personnel and legal terminology. The child's responsibility to listen to questions, answer questions and tell the truth is also explained. The content of a child's evidence is not discussed.
The court preparation program helps children gain a level of control over their involvement in the criminal justice system.
The Child Witness Service can also provide consultation with both the WA Police and Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
